Our Company Mission
Great Midwest Lamb Company's mission is to solve these challenges in the meat industry and offer consumers:
Premium, all-natural, family farm produced lamb using traditional methods. Our lamb is all-natural with no artificial additives used in production. All of our lambs are naturally raised on lush green pastureland. Our lamb's sweet and mild taste is a result of traditional farming and sustainable agriculture.
Healthier, protein and nutrient packed lamb meat to aid in a healthier lifestyle and overall well-being. Natural lamb is a valuable source of protein, minerals and B-group vitamins including niacin, thiamin and riboflavin. Also, lamb is lean and low in cholesterol compared to other animal proteins. In fact, half of any fat in lamb is mono-unsaturated, the same type of fatty acids found in olive oil.
Contribution to the America's family farms and agriculture. We believe that saving America's family farmers is vital to our nation's future. By partnering exclusively with traditional family farms, we believe we are strengthening rural America and our agriculture against the disparaging movement of industrial agriculture that is eroding much of the beauty in our rural land and displacing many farmers from the land that have worked extremely hard for.
Unfortunate Trends and Problems within Meat Industry
Great Midwest Lamb Company addresses the following emerging and unfortunate trends and problems:
Consumers increasingly seeking better, healthier products, but not being able to find products, especially lamb meat, for consumption to help live a healthier lifestyle.
Increased demand for organic and natural products; however the offering of natural processed food especially lamb meat, being limited.
Most meat offered being derived from industrial farming rather than natural and traditional family farming. Most lamb meat is being produced from industrial farming.
Quality and taste of lamb declining due to livestock being heavily medicated with steroid and growth hormones to accelerate growth and maintain health under stressful circumstances as well as cost pressures and compromised farming generally.
Company History and Direct E-Commerce Marketing Channel Formation
Managing Director Ben Calkins, a long time sheep farmer, started Great Midwest Lamb Company several decades ago with the intent to provide premium, all-natural, family farm produced lamb to consumers who wanted to consume lamb that was both healthy and deliciously tasting.
To develop consistent superior quality, Ben started supplying lamb to neighbors and other close acquaintances that knew about his farm and all-natural, family farm produced lamb. Everyone that tasted Ben's family farm produced lamb was hooked on the tender, flavorful and delicious taste of the lamb product not to mention all the protein and nutrients in the premium, all-natural lamb. As the popularity for his lamb products increased, Ben realized that his farm needed to build an additional marketing channel to increase the awareness and make his premium, all-natural, family farm produced lamb readily available to all consumers. Ben envisioned e-commerce as the direct marketing tool that could provide the awareness of the lamb product and the appropriate marketing channel that could grow the business. As Ben was looking for a partner to help develop and operate the e-commerce business for his premium, all-natural lamb products, Ben got introduced to Fred Elabed. Fred, a proven e-commerce entrepreneur and investor who had already started, built and sold an e-commerce solutions and website development firm reviewed the business plan and decided to partner with Ben on developing and growing an e-commerce business model concept:
To offer premium, all-natural, family farm produced American lamb that is hormone free to individual consumers via direct e-commerce marketing www.greatmidwestlamb.com. Great Midwest Lamb Company was launched!
